The 1950's provided many great styles to be remembered. The use of bold colors and large wallpaper prints provided inspiration for years to come. However, today's take on these vintage styles is to go lightly. While the 50's decorator would make full use of leopard print wallpaper on every wall; the modern decorator would consider it to be an accent. Though the modern decorator may be more refined; it is clear that they share the tastes of the decorators of the past.
A new design style begins with the background. Having a pattern created with black and white will break up a room that is filled with solid colors or a monochromatic scheme. Have fun with pattern on the walls can be done in ways that wouldn't work on a specific piece of furniture. You can have your furniture blend into the wallpaper by sticking to black and white pieces. Or your furniture can stand out away from the wall with the use of color.
Every home contains some painted wall surface or woodwork. Wallpaper, though, has experienced a revival in popularity in the past few years. One key difference with today's materials and wallpaper designs is that there are a vast new array of patterns, colors and textures compared with the dated styles of twenty or thirty years ago. Another major development has been new and improved tools for applying wallpaper and wallpaper borders.
Paper backed or solid sheet vinyl is another very durable type of wallpaper. It is almost like vinyl coated wallpaper, except that it has a layer of pulp or paper on the back. It is still very moisture-resistant and easy to clean, so it works well in any room. Fabric backed vinyl can be a little more tricky. It is usually more durable than coated fabric, but not necessarily as durable as paper backed or solid sheet, or vinyl coated wallpaper. It consists of fabric with vinyl, but the fabric layer is not always coated. So be careful to fully inspect this type of wallpaper before purchasing it for your decorating job.
