In the 50's, bold and exciting was the rage among many homesteaders. Courageous use of bright colors such as orange and yellow was common. As well, many wall prints of the time were large, busy, and used in copious amounts. To complement these loud statements, lighting, wall hangings, and accessories were much more subtle and tended to be used in moderation. It would not have been uncommon to see a den covered floor to ceiling, wall to wall in textured leopard print wall paper. To complement this pattern, many throw pillows and lampshades were in simple solids of coordinating colors.
There are also other, more specific and unique types of wallpaper. Some of these are flock wallpaper, which is made with wool to give it a velvety feel and an elegant design; grass cloth wallpaper, which is made with different types of grass, and foil wallpaper, made with various metal foils. The disadvantage of these is that they are difficult to work with, and not very durable. Also, foil wallpaper will crease and bend, and highlight any flaw behind the wall that it is put on.
Consider the paper material itself and whether it is a wrinkle free, non stretch fabric based material. Remember that the wallpaper can be delivered to you as a single massive sheet, poster size panels or in pre-cut lengths that are easiest of all to install. Light fastness is an issue with some products, particularly the cheaper ones, so in order to avoid disappointment with fading be sure to double check the claims in the product specifications before ordering. Keep this simple checklist in mind and you are sure to be enjoying the dramatic effects of high quality wallpaper murals in your home and office for many years ahead.
Tissue and softer colored papers create a unique design that's affordable and delicate enough for a little girl's room-or rough and complex enough to fit into a den. Tissue paper comes in a wide variety of colors to suit any design. They also can easily be mottled with various stains, paints or glazes to create an overlying texture and complexity to any wallpaper wall art design. Complex designs and intricate patterns can be created using a wide variety of cheap and disposable materials. Magazine pictures create awesome collages with ease. Old postcards create a design theme that can take you around the world. Old Chinese newspapers can create the perfect backdrop to any Asian inspired space. Being creative with your wallpaper design might be cheap, but it can look like a million bucks once it's complete.
