The 1950's provided many great styles to be remembered. The use of bold colors and large wallpaper prints provided inspiration for years to come. However, today's take on these vintage styles is to go lightly. While the 50's decorator would make full use of leopard print wallpaper on every wall; the modern decorator would consider it to be an accent. Though the modern decorator may be more refined; it is clear that they share the tastes of the decorators of the past.
In the 50's, bold and exciting was the rage among many homesteaders. Courageous use of bright colors such as orange and yellow was common. As well, many wall prints of the time were large, busy, and used in copious amounts. To complement these loud statements, lighting, wall hangings, and accessories were much more subtle and tended to be used in moderation. It would not have been uncommon to see a den covered floor to ceiling, wall to wall in textured leopard print wall paper. To complement this pattern, many throw pillows and lampshades were in simple solids of coordinating colors.
